BJ Lawson
Candidate for U.S. House of Representatives
NC 4th Congressional District

Speaker: William "B.J." Lawson is a husband, father of three and concerned citizen with a background in engineering, medicine, business and entrepreneur ship.
After graduating from Lakeland Senior High School in Florida, B.J. came to North Carolina in 1992 to study engineering and then medicine at Duke University. His high-school sweetheart, now wife, JoLynn attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, which made Duke's engineering even more attractive.

JoLynn and B.J. married after college graduation, where she taught elementary school in Durham while BJ started medical school. After receiving his medical degree in 2000, Dr. Lawson then started neurosurgery residency at Duke University.

Despite a strong calling to medicine, B.J. recognized opportunity to address a fundamental inefficiency in our healthcare system: to take care of patients, all physicians need timely and portable access to patient information and in 2001 started Durham-based, MercuryMD.

Like many Americans, throughout his experience creating a company, and taking a risk, BJ began to ask specific questions regarding our economic system and the role of the government in the economy. The more his company created and prospered, the more government seemed to get in the way and the more concerned he became for our nation and most importantly our children.

"Taking the risk to start and grow a company was an amazing education, and my immersion in the world of raising money, growing teams, and serving customers led me to study the broader problems facing our society outside of technology and healthcare."

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) passed by Congress and signed by the President may fundamentally change how American health care is financed. It is critical that small and mid-size employers understand how the new provisions will affect their employer-sponsored health insurance plans. While most federal and state enabling regulations have yet to be written, this seminar will share the most up-to-date information available.

Who Should Attend:
Business owners, CEOs, CFOs, COOs, HR professionals, CPAs, Insurance Agents and Brokers who are responsible for employee benefits for small and mid-size businesses.

Purpose:
The purpose of this seminar is to educate stakeholders of small to mid-size employers on the impact of the new PPACA provisions on employees and employer-sponsored health plans.

Objectives: At the end of this seminar you will be able to:

• Identify when specific PPACA provisions take effect on employers.
• Describe the impact of major PPACA provisions on small and large employers.
• Identify new PPACA reporting and notification requirements by employers.
• Describe new PPACA penalties on large employers.
• Explain tax law changes in 2011 and beyond impacting small to mid-size businesses.

Presenters:
Chad V. Blankenburg, RHU, President, NCAHU and NC Sales Manager for The Cason Group, Inc., a general agency that provides its agents and brokers with unparalleled sales, marketing, administrative and service support. He has been with the company since 2003. Prior to The Cason Group, he was with Pacific Life & Annuity. He graduated with a B.A. from Wake Forest University.

Teresa C. Gutierrez, LUTCF, Vice President, NCAHU and President of IBS/White Bear Group insurance and consulting group. Teri brings over 20 years of experience in group health, self-funding, disability, life, and voluntary benefits for mid-size businesses. Teri was also appointed to represent health insurance agents and brokers on the new North Carolina Health Benefit Exchange and Insurance Oversight Workgroup in preparation for the NC Health Insurance Exchange in 2014 as mandated in the PPACA legislation. She has bachelor degrees in Marketing and Business Administration from Barton College, NC.

Tom Snell, JD, is a managing partner of Benefit Edge of the Carolinas, Inc., a benefits consulting firm with offices in Raleigh, Durham and Sanford, NC. Previously, Tom was with the NC office for Wells Fargo TPA Services (formerly J. Smith Lanier & Co. Administrators), Trigon Administrators, and Mid-South Insurance Company. A graduate of Wake Forest University and NCCU School of Law, Tom has over 27 years experience in insurance and employee benefits. He has earned his CLU, ChFC, RHU, and REBC professional designations, and been involved in the design, implementation, and administration of a multitude of consumer directed health plans. Tom is a frequent speaker for continuing education courses, established an insurance school, and edits two national benefits newsletters.

Richard M. Reedman, FA, CFE, ACCA, CSA, EA, ABA/ATA, USTCP. Richard was born in England and has lived in the USA for the past 28 years. He became a US citizen in 1993. Richard attended DeMontfort University in the UK and qualified, in the UK, as a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) - a professional worldwide organization for Chartered Certified Accountants. His credentials include: United States Tax Court Practitioner (USTCP); Enrolled Agent (EA) - Licensed to Practice and Represent Individuals and Businesses before the IRS; Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) - a Global Professional Association - dedicated to the Investigation & Prevention of Fraud; Forensic Certified Public Accountant (FCPA) - Forensic Accounting & Fraud Investigation; Certified Senior Advisor; Member of the National Society of Accountants (NSA); Accredited Business Accountant (ABA); Accredited Tax Advisor (ATA); Member of the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP); Secretary - Central Carolina Chapter - Association of Certified Fraud Examiners; Secretary - North Carolina Society of Enrolled Agents; Vice President - Raleigh Chapter National Society of Accountants.

Topic: Healthcare IT in NC

Speaker: Andrew Weniger, CPA
Andrew Weniger is Project Manager of the North Carolina Healthcare Information & Communications Alliance, Inc. (NCHICA), a private, nonprofit consortium of healthcare providers, payers, corporate partners, professional associations and government agencies formed in 1994 with the mission of improving health and care in NC by accelerating the adoption of information technology and enabling policies. Andrew is responsible for contracts at NCHICA including the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) contract with the Office of the National Coordinator/Health and Human Services, a $6 million contract. As part of this Trial Implementation, Andrew has managed the successful connection of North Carolina Hospitals and physician practices with a nationwide network of networks. In addition to proving this standards-based exchange of information, Andrew developed a Business Sustainability Plan for Health Information Exchange (HIE) in North Carolina. In his role at NCHICA, Andrew has facilitated significant progress on policy, privacy and security issues related to health information technology and HIE across North Carolina.

Andrew came to the field of eHealth by following his passion for the difference healthcare IT can make in patient's lives. Andrew is a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of the Board of the Chatham County Economic Development Corporation. He graduated with honors with a BBA in Accounting & Logistics Management from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas.
